Seagate Expansion USB Portable External Hard Drive Review
Computers — By GD ReviewsThe Seagate Expansion USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive is the bestselling hard drive of its kind. The reason they call it expansion is because you are truly expanding your computer with so much space getting added on. It’s sleek, black, chic, sleek, and it has deep defined edges and contour lines that make storing your backup data as sexy as it is functional. The model comes in different hard drive capacities, depending on what your needs are. This product is a unique data backup portable external hard drive because you get so much storage for the price. It’s like having the hard drive of another computer at your fingertips. It’s an extraordinary little thing to have so much hard drive space in it.
The drive is powered through a USB cable so there is absolutely no need for any kind of external power supply. It is instantly recognized by the Windows operating system so that makes it easy because there is no software to install and nothing to configure at all. Furthermore, saving files is super-simple because you just drag-and-drop. It’s not only easy to use, but it’s fast and energy efficient as well.
The good thing is that the drive only weighs one pound too, which makes it compact and portable for on-the-go people. You can instantly add more storage space to your existing computer and take large files with you wherever you go if you’re traveling. The set-up is straightforward and simple, and you just connect a single USB cable, and you’re instantly ready to go. There is absolutely no need for an external power supply because the drive is powered from a USB cable. This fast and energy-efficient device has a data transfer speed with 2.0 connectivity and 5400 rpm drive performance too. The built-in power management also ensures that the energy efficient operation will be flawless and a breeze to use.
It even has built-in power management that ensures an energy-efficient operation, and you can drag-and-drop to save your files too. There is even a 2 year limited warranty in case anything goes wrong on your product. This is one of the best products ever for taking big files with you when you travel because it is so easy to handle, mall and sleek. Some of its advantages include:
- Quiet use
- Extremely fast operation
- Small and sleek form factor
- No power supply needed at all
- Only requires the use of a single USB port
- Simple/custom backups with Seagate Manager built-in software
- Sync option with Seagate Manager software
- Beautiful and functional form factor
The downsides includes that it goes into standby after 5 minutes as a default setting, but that can be easily changed, and overall, this product is an A+ hard drive, however.
This hard drive sets itself apart from other storage drives with software not being needed to be installed, automatic recognition, and a more intuitive way to store files by dragging and dropping them. You can even transform your expansion drive to become an all-in-one complete backup solution that automatically protects everything on your PC’s hard drive. How’s that for a complete solution based on a small portable external hard drive?
The huge storage sizes of this hard drive provide even more backup space than an average computer. That is the reason Seagate excels among power users and people that rely on digital storage for their businesses, companies, or corporations in settings ranging from vice president to CEO.
The effortless backup without any hard work on your part or software to figure out can really open up new doors of opportunity to your desktop publishing and storage needs for doing a lot more work than ever before. It will no longer seem so impossible to just back things up and store them for professional or personal use. In other words, that task won’t be eating up your time, and you can get a lot more work done. Other hard drives except you to install a lot of fancy software to get them going, but even though the Seagate model is extremely powerful, it doesn’t require any software.
The price on this model is extremely low for the value that it provides. You save money on hard drive space, with each higher-priced model that you buy. You can even get a little hard drive case for it, and be portable in style with the Seagate Expansion USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive.

What is the difference between a regular external hard drive and an expansion drive other than that a regular external drive needs its own power whereas an expansion drive does not need its own power? Are there any pros/cons of one over the other?
Actually, some regular external hard drives (notably, the 3.5″ ones) will require power. I’d say “expansion drive” is just a term that Seagates uses for its marketing. I’d consider all external hard drives as either 2.5″ or 3.5″. The main difference is that the 3.5″ are less portable, requires power, and can offer more storage space.
Just one question,is there any way to get the Expansion drive to do autmatic backups. Is it even recommendable to do so?
Thanks
Unfortunately the drive itself doesn’t come with that capability, but you can use free software such as this from Comodo (a pretty reputable company) http://backup.comodo.com/download.html
Automatic backups are highly recommended.
Hello, thank you for your quick response. About the automatic back-up, my question was more along the lines of it being recommended with this particular Seagate model. I have read a couple of reviews about this model presenting problems with software of this type. To your knowledge, is this an isolated problem? or, is it more generalized? Thank you for any help in this regard.
Silence!
Thanks for your reply – for some reason your first comment didn’t trigger a notification.
The issue with the drive is with the “sleep” mode, which is enabled by default. You can disable this, and the drive would be perfect. You can do this by using the free Seagate Manager program available on the Seagate website, or simply by formatting the drive in Windows (or Mac).
Thank you!
I’ve seen this at a good price but some resarch prior to buying has uncovered masses of online comments about lound clicking (“The Click of Death”), even on warranty replacements. What do you make of this? Seagates warranty policy is replacement only, so if this is a design failing then I would be stuck with it.
Seagate does have this problem, and it has happened to several people who have bought their drives (not just this Expansion model). It does not happen to 100% of their drives, though, and it seems like only a fraction of people experience this issue.
Do you guys know if there are any compatibility issues with the xbox 360?
p.s the OG elite 360 not the new versions
Don’t know about the XBox, but this is a pretty standard USB external hard drive, so if it works with those, it should work with this Seagate.
I can not delete or edit files once I have saved them onto my seagate hard drive as they are all set to (read only).
I have tried to change the setting on the properties but with no success.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Sounds like you might be running a Mac (OSX) and using a NTFS-formatted Seagate drive? If so, OSX is horrible with NTFS. Re-format the drive to something else like FAT.
hello,i have bought this kind of hardisk.and i want to ask a few questions, can the free software from the comodo.com help to backup files or restore the save files when there is any changes occur on the hardisk memory?and how i can improve the capability of my hardisk?
Yes, backup software helps you with automating the backup/restore process with any hard drive.
ok.thank you very much.
What is the difference between an expansion drive and a regular hard drive? Is it just a hard drive encased and has it’s own power source? Do you believe the failures I see here just might be because of “rough” handling? Should they be handled extremely gently? Thanks, David
Yes, the expansion drive has a more rugged enclosure, but as of any hard drive (because hard drives operate by spinning), I always believe handling shouldn’t be too rough.
