Sharp LC52E77U 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV Review

HDTV — By GD Reviews

As of now (Jan 2010), this LCD TV from Sharp appears to be the best value 52″ LCD TV around.

Custom Calibration

The Sharp LC-52E77U LCD TV provides fairly user-friendly calibration tools (including white balance controls), but unlike some of the other LCD TVs, you can use the Sharp LC52E77U without any custom tweaking at all. Blu-ray movies look gorgeous, and ATSC digital broadcast reception (via RCA ANT1500 Large Multi-Directional Digital Flat Passive Antenna) is excellent too.

Screen Finish

The Sharp LC-52E77U LCD TV provides a matte look, not a sharp reflection, which works well if you have the TV situated near a window. The brightness of the TV is sufficient enough to overcome typical reflections, except in the case of dark scenes that have more blacks in them. To improve visibility in bright lighted rooms, there is an OPC (Optimum Picture Control) setting in the Picture menu that when enabled, automatically adjusts the back-lighting for your room light conditions and viewing content.

720p/1080i/1080p Picture Quality

One of the strong points of the Sharp LC52E77U is that it presents HD pictures cleanly and sharply, with saturated colours. Side-to-side motion artifact effects are a little jerky, but acceptable. “Cut-out” effects experienced with other 120hz TVs are not experienced with this set, but there is a little depth reduction, but again acceptable.

To improve the presentation and reduce processing noise, we would recommend the following settings:

  • Sharpness: Nil
  • Fine Motion Enhanced (120 Hz feature): Off (Except for sports)
  • Digital Noise Reduction: Low

Inputs

A variety of multimedia devices can be connected to the set through any one of the four HDMI 1.3 inputs, and the customizable remote lets you control all your CEC-enabled peripherals using just one device. HDMI is the best performing interface for displaying an HD source on an HDTV. With the convenient 15-pin dSub connection, you can connect to your computer system and play your favorite PC games.

So you can see that inputs are sufficient, and the only drawback is that this LCD TV does not have DLNA/Internet connectivity. If you’re using this LCD TV while connected to a MediaPC or similar, then you would find this redundant anyway.

Aesthetics

The frame of this LCD TV looks good, and has thin 1.5” beveled side and top borders. The only odd thing is that the bottom is not black, but in fact a very dark brown. It’s unnoticeable and appears as black, and you’ll only notice that it’s not if you look very closely. If you don’t want to hang the TV up, the Sharp LC52E77U also comes with a table-top stand, and can swivel from side-to-side.

Audio Output

Sharp does not disappoint with the audio output on the Sharp LC52E77U. Upper range is clear and volume is strong, with excellent voice clarity.

Value For Money

Similar TVs simply cannot beat the Sharp LC52E77U’s feature set and price bracket. Here are its competitors:

  • LG 55LH40: Around $1700
  • LG 55LH55 (better specs and picture quality): Around $1800
  • Sony KDL-52V5100: Around $1700
  • Samsung LN55B650: Around $1900

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a LCD TV that has all the important stuff that you need, and not much of the frills, then the Sharp LC52E77U LCD TV is just what you want. The Sharp LC-52E77U is priced very aggressively, considering that Sharp normally would be at premium prices. I would highly recommend this LCD TV.

Where To Buy

Amazon.com sent a couple of very nice and friendly guys who delivered it, unpacked everything and set it up on the TV stand properly. The TV came without any dead pixels and was bundled with a 12 month warranty. If you register your warranty online, you get an extra 3 more months on top of that.

You really narrowed it down for me and I’m really excited to see the Sharp in person. I just started looking into getting one but I wanted to read so reviews first. My co-worker at DISH said that he has a Sharp and love everything about it. I haven’t heard one this about the Sharp HDTV’s and I’m glad. I was told the picture is clear and the audio works just fine. All good things that I like to hear. I wonder since I have HD free for life with DISH if the picture is going to be better than what everyone is saying. Not every has HD and I know my DISH co-worker doesn’t so we will see.
